Anatomy of a Zipper

YKK Zipper StructureYKK® zippers can be divided into three major parts: the tape, elements and slider.

Tape

The tape is manufactured exclusively for zippers. It is usually made of polyester, but depending on use, synthetic fiber tape, vinyl tape and cotton tape are also available.

Elements

Coil ziperThe teeth, also known as elements, are the parts on each side of a zipper that mesh, or engage, with each other when passed through the slider. When the left and the right side teeth are engaged they are called chain. Rockywoods carries zippers in Molded Tooth (or plastic, shown to the left), Metal Tooth and Coil (shown to the right) styles.

Slider

The slider joins or separates the elements when the zipper is opened or closed. Various types of sliders are available depending on use. Sliders do wear out and are one of the main zipper failure causes we see.  If your zipper doesn't work, try lubricating the zipper with a little paraffin wax on the teeth or install a new zipper slider before replacing the whole zipper.

Zipper Types

Rockywoods carries 4 zipper types:
  • Non-Separating (or Closed-end) Zippers (shown above to the left).  These zippers can only open from one direction and have a stop at one end to keep the zipper from coming apart.  Used on bags, pant flys and other openings where you want a strong zipper to open but not separate.  Pocket zippers are non-separating zippers.  These tend to be smaller zippers, often coil zippers, and  are used primarily for pockets in clothing where you want to be able to control the opening and closing or a pocket or vent.
  • One-way (or Open-end) Separating Zippers.  The workhorse zipper for jackets, vests, coats and other garments where you want to open a closure and separate the parts.  Dual SliderReversible Zippers are just one-way zippers with a special reversible slider (shown to the left) that allows the user to open and close the zipper from either side.  It's a nice touch for a jacket or ski coat.
  • Two-way zipperTwo-way Separating Zippers (shown to the right).  These zippers can open and close using two sliders.  Most often the sliders are arranged on the ends allowing you to open and close the zipper opening from the ends.  They can be in the middle allowing you to open the zipper from the center.
  • Coil Zipper By The Yard
