Cuben Fiber Fabrics
Cuben Fiber flexible laminates are about the strongest lightweight fabric we've seen.
Originally developed for racing sailboat sales, this stuff is tough. The sails made from Cuben Fiber have proven to be both fast and extremely durable. Cuben Fiber sails are
lighter, stronger, have incredible rip-stop performance, have lower stretch than competing materials, and are much more durable due to our materials
development program and patented manufacturing process. A general guideline is that a Cuben Fiber sail normally weighs between 20-40% less than the
same sail you would build in Kevlar. The overall tensile property degradations of Team Adventure's Cuben Fiber mainsail were in the range of only 6-18% after 35000 miles of heavy open ocean sailing.
More durable than Kevlar and the fibers do not lose strength
from folding and flexing. These laminates are extremely thin, you could about pack your tent into your wallet!
Cuben Fiber Fabrics are used in a wide variety of applications where a durable, thin, high-strength, low weight fabric (50-70% lighter than Kevlar) is important such as backpacks, backcountry
tarps, parachutes, kites, balloons,
airships, tension structures, tubes and tube reinforcements, flexible pressure vessels, medical devices, protective clothing, aerospace
equipment, etc. Only comes as a white translucent film. All laminates are made with a UV absorbing titanium resin. They resist salt-water and do
not soak up water.
The manufacturer recommends bonding with Dimension's Ultra Bonding Kit for sail construction. We've also heard of customers using two-sided tape to
construct items other than sails.
