Bivy Sack Kits and Patterns
A "Bivouac" sack, bivi, or bivy sack is a
great substitute for a tent where you're really want to cut down on weight, AND you don't mind the tighter quarters of a bivy sack. Think of this
as a super-light personal shelter that protects you and your sleeping bag from snow, rain, wind and insects. The extra trapped layer of air also
increases the warmth retention of your bag as well. (Wikipedia)
This pattern is a straightforward design, is simple and compact, and requires no poles or stakes to use. There's a Velcro
sealed hood with a removable mosquito netting insert, a tie-loop to pull it away from your face, and plenty of room for protecting your boots, clothing
and other gear. It's approximately 110" long and 36" wide at the top, tapering to 32" wide at the foot.
You can order the parts separately of choose one of the kits below. The kits include everything you need (including the seal
sealer) except for the
thread. You'll want a good polyester thread.
If you want start from scratch you'll need the following materials:
| Upper Shell |
2 yards of a 60" wide lightweight 2-ply waterproof breathable fabric like Extreme. We'd don't recommend a lining but
you'll need to be careful you don't scratch the inner coated surface when you use the bivy sack. |
| Lower Shell |
2 yards of a 60" wide lightweight coated ripstop nylon. You can use the 1.3oz silicone coated nylon but we recommend the 1.9oz
ripstop and include it in our kits. It's tougher and easier to sew. |
| Hood Netting |
1 yard of 45-60" wide mosquito netting and 1/4 yard of a stiff mesh like Leno Mesh for the visor. |
| Hardware and Notions |
1 yard of 1" webbing 1-1/4 yard of 3/4" wide Velcro hook and loop (remember to order both)
1 each 1-1/2" D-Ring
Seam Sealer if you want waterproof seams
Polyester thread |
